The Matoran Underworld

Every city, even Metru Nui, has its share of crime. Part of the job of the Vahki is to track down and pacify lawbreakers, a task they carry out with great efficiency. Here are just a few of the major types of criminal activity the Vahki deal with regularly:

Smuggling

Rare Kanoka disks, artifacts discovered by Onu-Matoran miners or archivists, even Rahi, all of these things have value. That attracts less scrupulous Matoran, who may attempt to ferry such objects from their place of discovery to private collectors without going through normal channels. The smugglers are the sellers, and in most cases Onu-Matoran or Ko-Matoran are the buyers. One enterprising smuggler once smashed an ancient carving, then concealed the pieces inside Kanoka disks being manufactured in Ko-Metru. His partner then managed to obtain all the disks and heat them enough to retrieve the piece without doing it damage.

At one time, smuggling rings also dealt in objects from places other than Metru Nui. But since Turaga Dume ordered all gateways to other lands closed, the lawbreakers have focused their operations at home. Bordakh have proven to be the most effective at breaking up rings, by using their staffs to convert low-level members over to their way of thinking. A Bordakh-stunned Matoran will lead the Vahki right to his partners and any loot they have stashed.

Theft

There was a time when the only incidents of theft in Metru Nui involved a crafter taking another's tools or something equally minor. That was before the chute network became as extensive as it now. The expansion of the transportation system made it easier for criminals to find ways to divert cargo shipments down little-used chutes where they could be looted at leisure. Le-Matoran monitor the chutes and shipments as best they can, but with thousands of tons of cargo going through the system every day, it is impossible to keep track of it all. The most serious theft to date occurred very recently, when a shipment of Great Masks going from Ta-Metru to Ga-Metru disappeared en route. The thieves were never caught and the whereabouts of the masks remain unknown.

Disk Dueling

Physical violence between Matoran is almost unheard of. But Matoran with serious disagreements have been known to engage in disk dueling. Standing on opposite sides of an akilini field, Matoran sling disks at each other. The first one to hit the other wins. Unfortunately, depending on the disks used, these duels can have very serious effects (one Matoran was shrunk so small that he still has not been found. Another was reconstituted into something so grotesque he almost wound up on display as a Rahi in the Archives). Disk dueling is highly illegal and is certain to bring swift action from the Vahki.

Forgery

An uncommon crime, but a dangerous one. A small group of criminals in Po-Metru attempted to pass off disks carved from solid protodermis as Kanoka disks (which are, of course, made from purified liquid protodermis). Purchasers discovered they had disks with no powers at all, often too late to save themselves from the Rahi they were trying to use the disks on. That ring was smashed by Vahki, but others may spring up to take its place.

Purchase of Artifacts

Travelers are advised to be cautious when purchasing artifacts, particularly from street peddlers. These artifacts may be forgeries or stolen property. If you suspect you have purchased an illegal artifact, notify the Vahki immediately.
