Sporting Events

Looking for exciting events to watch in Metru Nui?
A short chute ride will get you to the Coliseum in time for the great akilini tournament, presided over by Turaga Dume himself.

Akilini

Akilini is the official sport of Metru Nui, drawing hundreds of spectators for every match. If you can't get into the Coliseum, don't worry - there are pick-up games played on improvised fields all over the city.

In akilini, teams of 3-6 Matoran compete to see who can throw more disks through the scoring hoops. Tournament matches are played on the constantly shifting and undulating field of the Coliseum, with hoops mounted along the top of the arena. A special set of chutes is lowered over the top of the Coliseum and players are allowed to use them in maneuvers. The essence of the game is speed and skill, and the physical nature of the sport leads to a lot of fouls.

There are three tiers of akilini competition. The lowest rung features play with power level 1-6 disks, the middle rung with level 7 disks, and the best players are allowed to compete with level 8 disks.

Disk Racing

A popular street sport, disk racing involves Matoran riding their Kanoka in chutes, through canals, and in other dangerous spots. Although frowned on by the Vahki, disk racers only risk serious consequences if they distract workers from their jobs or sustain injury that might keep them from working their shift. This sports is particularly popular among Le-Matoran, who know the locations of all the best "chute tracks."

Kanoka Toss

Another highly dangerous sport, this is a favorite in Ta-Metru and Onu-Metru. Two players compete against each other. One player hurls a Kanoka disk with all of his might, while the other attempts to catch it. The trick is to catch the disk after it has expended so much momentum that doing so will not trigger its power. This requires split-second timing and a lot of courage - it's not unusual for Kanoka toss players to wind up frozen, shrunken, or reconstituted into something even a Rahkshi would be sickened by. Onu-Matoran take the game one step farther, going down to Archive sub-levels to play "Kanoka toss in the dark."

Metru Nui Fact

Here are a few interesting facts you might not know about akilini:

- Teams are required by the rules to use only Kanoka disks made in their own metru in tournament play. In particular, non-Po-Matoran using Po-Metru disks is forbidden (Po-Metru disks widely considered to be the best in competition).

- Winning teams' disks are immediately transported to Ta-Metru to be turned into Kanohi masks. This is considered to be a great honor by Matoran athletes.
